Cost

In order to compete in any Destructive event each bot has to pay an entry fee.  Each bot can be a part of a team of up to 4 people. Your entry fee gives you access to the event as well as the ability to compete in a minimum of 3 fights. Once you are knocked out of the tournament you may still compete in side matches and rumbles while we break for repairs to the bots still in the tournament.

This entry fee goes towards the cost of the venue, prizes, upgrades, repairs to the box, and paying volunteers. We have structured the following discounts into the price structure:

  1. Bots that are entered into the u/19 tournaments have a 25% discount (in order to qualify for the u/19 tournament at least 50% of the team must be under the age of 19 and the bot can only be driven by one of these team members).

  2. Bots that have competed in 4 or more SARL tournaments in the last 12 months will get a 10% discount.

For the Destructive Class Tournaments, the price of entry is R250.00 per bot.

  • u/19 price per bot: R187.50

  • 5th tournament in 12 months: R225.00

Our entry-level Non-Destructive tournaments have a voluntary entry fee, meaning that on the day of the tournament if you are feeling generous you can opt to pay a R100.00 entry fee that will go towards covering event costs and improving infrastructure.

Ranking

Our Season runs from January to November with a main event in December each year.

To compete in our main event, you need to have qualified throughout the season by accumulating Qualifying Points (QP). A team's QP is determined by adding together the League Points (LP) and the Alternate Points (AP) You need a minimum of 15 QP to compete in the Main Event.

League Points (LP)

The ranking is determined by the accumulation of League Points (LP) and cannot be affected by Alternate Points (AP). Ties in League Points are broken by the win rate.

You can accumulate League Points (LP) in the following ways:

  • Competing in a tournament = 1 Point

  • Progressing past the qualifying round and into the bracket = 1 Point

  • Progressing to the quarter-finals if the bracket is 16 or larger = 1 Point

  • Progressing to the semi-finals if the bracket is 8 or larger = 1 Point

  • Placing 3rd at a tournament = 1 Point

  • Placing 2nd at a tournament = 2 Points

  • Placing 1st at a tournament = 3 Points

Alternate Points (AP)

Alternate Points (AP) are points that count towards your team qualifying for the main event, without affecting your League Ranking. You may only accumulate 5 Alternate Points (AP) per season.

You can accumulate Alternate Points (AP) in the following ways:

  • Attending a fundraising event with your bot = 1 Point

  • Winning one of our alternate prizes at a tournament = 1 Point

  • Being Ranked top 5 at the end of our season (before the main event) = 5 Points

  • Sharing a Photograph of your bot on Social Media with merch from our merch fundraisers (T-Shirt Fundraiser) and tagging us in your post. = 1 Point

FAQ

Robot playing with toy_edited.png

1) Why cant we use fire as a weapon?

The current rules bar the use of fire in any form as a weapon in SARL Tournaments for a number of reasons, most promonantly, the arena is expensive and fire poses a damage risk which would mean that maintenasnce on the arena will be more costly. As the SARL grows we will look into possibly investing in an arena that allows for fire based weapons.

2) How many events are there each year?

We are planning to have 7 league events each year with the first 6 being qualifying events and the 7th being the main event in December of each year. As you attend the league events, you will gain League Points and these League Points will go towards qualifying you for the Main Event. We might also have smaller non-league events throughout the year for drivers to practice and have fun.

3) Why are all the events in Johannesburg?

At the moment, all our events are JHB based because we live in JHB. As the hobby grows we will expand to hold events in other areas of South Africa, but for now we feel that starting small will give us the best chance for sucsess when it comes to growing the hobby in South Africa. If you would like to start your own league we are happy to help, please contact Danica on 081 259 5125 for more information.

About Us

Event Organiser and Community for Robot related competition in South Africa

The South African Robotics League (SARL) aims to create a community that celebrates the design and engineering of robots, both controlled and autonomous, as a recreational activity for all ages. We aim to hold events where engineers of all ages can compete to show the fantastic power and durability of their designs.

Through the creation of this community and the hosting of these events, we aim to generate interest in robotics as more than only functional to the youth of South Africa. Robot fighting is one of the easiest entry points as it is reminiscent of a video game.

We're Based in South Africa

The South African Robotics League (SARL) is the brainchild of Jamie and Danica Peacock. SARL was first conceptualised in 2021 but the idea was put on the shelf when Jamie's business took off.

In 2023, following the couple's excited viewing of the 2022 Battlebots championship, the idea was once again taken down from the shelf, dusted off, and SARL was born.
